Features one half with U21 team

Hjelde (Achilles) featured one half with the youth team in Thurday's 1-0 win against Sporting CP, confirming he is back fit moving forward.

Analysis: Hjelde is set to reintegrate the senior squad after recovering from an Achilles injury and featuring one half in Thursday's 1-0 win over Sporting CP with the Sunderland U21 team. The defender will likely find a bench role for the Black Cats when returning to the match squad.

Expected to play with youth team

Hjelde (Achilles) is expected to play with Sunderland U21 in Thursday's clash against Sporting Lisbon, coach Regis Le Bris said in the press conference. "He will be involved in tonight's Under-21 fixture against Sporting Lisbon at the Stadium of Light."

Analysis: Hjelde has yet to feature with the senior squad this since after recovering from an Achilles injury. The defender is expected to build his fitness and play with the Sunderland U21 in Thursday's clash against Sporting Lisbon before integrating the senior match squad again. Once fully back fit, Hjelde is expected to claim back a bench role similarly to what he had last season with the Black Cats.

Running but won't return yet

Hjelde (Achilles) is back on the grass but won't be an option before the October international break, manager Regis Le Bris told media during his pre-match press conference Thursday. "Leo is now running."

Analysis: That's not much of a significant update, but Hjelde is inching closer toward returning to action now that he's back on the grass. He'll be assessed after the break, with his earliest chance to play coming against Wolverhampton on Saturday, Oct. 18.

Return takes longer than expected

Hjelde (achilles) will remain out for the time being due to injury, coach Regis Le Bris said in the press conference, according to the Northern Echo. "Leo has struggled with his Achilles and will be a bit longer than expected as well. He had the surgery for both (of his Achilles) and worked hard last season to be connected with the squad, even if it was painful. But now, like Dennis, he has to rest completely to be able to connect with the squad again later."

Analysis: Hjelde had surgery for both of his Achilles and his recovery will need some more time, making him unavailable for the time being. That said, with the recent addition of Reinildo and Arthur Masuaku, his absence isn't impacting the starting XI.
